Chapter 5 - Young and Beautiful

How do the lyrics to Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” relate to the novel?

  1. The lyrics to Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" relate to the novel because it explores the concept of beauty and love within the book through the characters. The song is about love and it relates to the love between Daisy and Gatsby. They mentioned in chapter 5 of the book (pg.75) that was the first time Daisy and Gatsby met eachother in 1917 when she was young, and in 1922 he still loves her just as much as he did 5 years in the past. The song expresses a sense of beauty and happiness just like their relationship in the past and present. The lyrics to the song are showing us like they did in the video that they are the same as they were when they first met.

  2. The use of Lana Del Rey's lyrics from her song "Young and Beautiful" are used to create this facade, one that emits nostalgia and a dream-like state of bliss for Daisy and Gatsby, which is quite important as this is what Gatsby and Daisy's relationship is, it's this false narrative being romanticized as these two can never really be together; in turn and on a surface level, it seems very sweet and endearing that Gatsby is still so in love with Daisy. I think there's a sort of climax here and we see the big comedown or burn out of Daisy as she is quiet and devastated in the clip, resembling the part in the book where Nick states, "... Daisy tumbled short of his dreams --- not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion" (95). This in context to when it's evident that he collects news clippings of her within chapter 5 shows that Daisy has become this romanticized version of someone she was five years ago when they had last seen each other, which isn't true love nor is it healthy.
"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?" Lana's lyrics here also embody Daisy as a character, she's someone sorrowful and reminiscent of the man whom she truly still loves, but can she ever really get her true love back when he's stuck in the past and faces devastation in tiny moments when she doesn't line up with what he has envisioned? Their love is childlike -temporary, foreshadowing something that has an inevitable end.

  3. The Song "Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Ray related to the book .very well. It is used to symbolize the past between Daisy and Gatsby. The lyric "All the ways I got to know Your pretty face and electric soul" This lyric can be related to Daisy and how Gatsby has and still does perceive her. The chorus in the song also talks about how when they are older and she is no longer young if he will still love her. Throughout the book it is questioned if Gatsby is in love with the old Daisy and if he will still love the Daisy now, Nick even brings this up and says " As I went over to say goodbye I saw the expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby's face, as thought a faint doubt had occured to him as to the quality of his present happiness. Almost five years; There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams" (Fitzgerald 95). The whole theme of the song is about if the two people will still love eachother no matter what Wich relates to the story line of the Great Gatsby very well. Overall this song not only relates to the book but can also be use dto help understand the book better.

  4. The lyrics of Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" show the themes of love, loss, and the fleeting nature of youth which appear in "The Great Gatsby. The song's focus on the fear of losing beauty and the desire for infinite love aligns with Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy.

"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" This line reflects Gatsby's desperation to recapture the past and Daisy's love. He wants to freeze time and hold onto their romance, even knowing that beauty and youth are temporary.
"I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will" This part of the song reveals the desire for reassurance.
"Dear Lord, I hope I die before I get old" The lurics really get at the heart of gatsbys tragic story, where he’s afraid of loosing that perfect image of daisy
